The nation, being rich in natural resources and industrial activities—especially in oil and gas, agriculture, and manufacturing—faces considerable challenges in balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, workplace safety, and public health. This analysis explores the current state of HSE laws and practices in Nigeria, highlights the gaps and improvements needed, and provides several reasons why businesses in Nigeria should adopt HSE principles.
The Current State of HSE in Nigeria

However, Nigeria lacks a unified, modern Occupational Safety and Health Act. While there are provisions within other laws, the absence of a consolidated and enforceable national OSH law leaves gaps in workplace safety standards.
Petroleum Act and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR): For oil and gas, the Petroleum Act provides guidelines for HSE practices, enforced by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR). The sector, given its economic significance, has seen stricter enforcement of HSE policies compared to others. Still, issues such as oil spills, gas flaring, and safety incidents persist, indicating room for improvement.
